Stand Out and Move Up in your Career

In October, Women in Trucking held their annual conference in Dallas and there were over 1,100 attendees. I was honored to be one of the presenters. In my session, I shared some specific ways to stand out and move up within any organization.

Wording choice, attitude, voice tone and facial expression can alienate others and cause you to be passed over for opportunities
• Women shared that, as they were promoted, they started to speak in a deeper voice and became less personable towards those who reported to them. The change happened over time and they needed the reminder to be uplifting and encouraging. Relationship building is an ongoing process.
• Facial expression is impactful. We can look irritated or concerned while we are in the middle of work or trying to listen to someone else. Eye contact and a friendly smile are important. Stop what you are doing, look up, smile and make eye contact.
Plan to move up
• Let leadership know you want to move up
• Women shared that they wait to be 100% prepared for the next position they have their eye on while men will just “go for it”. Often-times women miss out on promotions because they don’t believe they are good enough. Some employees expect to be noticed for the great work they are already doing and lose hope over time because they don’t get promoted. Speak up- throw your hat in the ring!
• Have a personal plan for developing skills and knowledge. Be curious. Read articles or listen to podcasts pertaining to the industry, customer service or managing people. Check out

There are many avenues available to you for professional growth.
Discern what is truth or a lie in the feedback and criticism you receive from others
• Criticism often hurts, but it should challenge you to examine what is true and what is not. That means you need to have a time of self-reflection. If it is true- act on it. If you aren’t sure- ask someone you respect for input and have your radar up so you can assess yourself in the future. If it is not true, move on.
• Understand how you respond to feedback. Are you too quick to defend? Does your heart race? Are you emotional?
• Take the initiative to implement change.
• Criticism is often the kick in the pants we need to be innovative and make great improvements.
